THE LIVING END

Since their early beginnings busking around the streets of Melbourne, Australia in 1994, The Living End has gone on to place number one on the album charts twice, had four platinum albums accredited to them, been awarded the APRA “Australian Song of the Year”, been nominated for 28 Australian Recording Industry Awards (ARIAs) and taken home six. They’ve played world tours, ute musters, seedy clubs and every festival around the globe, touring with bands like AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, The Offspring, Green Day, Rancid, No Doubt, Blink-182, Jet, Pennywise and Dropkick Murphys

Starting off as a Stray Cats styled cover band, Runaway Boys, that played rockabilly classics they decided to start writing original tunes and change their name to The Living End – a reference to the film, “Rock Around the Clock”. According to Chris Cheney (lead vocals, guitar) “It’s an old ’50s term, meaning ‘far out’, ‘the greatest’. We were so into the whole ’50s thing at the time, but we wanted a neutral name, something that didn’t really suggest any one style of music”.

The rock and roll trio’s first single release “Second Solution/Prisoner of Society” reached No. 4 on the ARIA Singles Chart and was certified double platinum. It was the highest selling single of that year and eventually the highest selling single of the 1990’s lasting a record-breaking 47 weeks in the Top 50 singles chart and was voted number 34 by the Australian public in Triple J Hottest 100 Australian Albums of all time.

Musicologist Ian McFarlane has described the group as “one of Australia’s premier rock acts. By blending a range of styles (punk, rockabilly and flat out rock) with great success, The Living End has managed to produce anthemic choruses and memorable songs in abundance”. In October 2010 their debut self-titled album was listed in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums. They have gone on to release another six albums and hold the record for the most consecutive entries in Triple J’s Hottest 100 – they made the end of year top 100 songs chart every year from 1997 for 10 years.

The Living End considers themselves to be a rock ‘n’ roll band with punk ethics and cite The Clash, Iggy Pop, The Who and The Jam as influences. They have also been compared favorably to 1990s punk revivalists Rancid and to Green Day with Billie Joe Armstrong signing them to his record label after touring with them in Australia. The band members do not consider themselves a punk band, rather a rock ‘n’ roll band that is influenced by punk. Allmusic’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine reviewed their debut album noting their “sound owes far more to the Ramones than it does to Eddie Cochran, or even the Clash, but they cleverly appropriate certain rockabilly signatures that give their homage to the golden age of punk a bit of charm”. Listen to their more recent releases and you’ll hear stylistic nods to acts as diverse as The Who, Bob Dylan, Bloc Party, The Beatles, Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen.

More recently Chris Cheney found himself treading the boards, starring as St Jimmy in the Australian production of the Billie Joe Armstrong penned musical “American Idiot”. The band also fulfilled a lifelong dream of playing live at the 2016 AFL Grand Final.
